INDIA CALLING...

A chat with Alex Marin, Production Manager at Kate Barton

Provenance is very important to us; where materials are sourced, where they are made, who’s making them and what processes are in place as part of the production journey. India is where a proportion of the Kate Barton garments are made and twice a year, Alex, our product manager makes the all important trip to visit our factories. Nothing beats face to face contact with our incredible suppliers, as well as the opportunity to see the fabrics and garments in the flesh.

Supplier trips tend to fall at the end of one season and just before the start of the next. Timing is everything and it’s critical to ensure that any snagging issues are caught ahead of moving into production, avoiding wasteful and costly mistakes. Things like fabric alignment and seams might need some tweaking here and there to ensure we are replicating the look exactly as Kate intended in her design process. Changing the fabric choice on a lining is another aspect that perhaps when seeing it first hand, alternations may be made - opting for something slightly heavier or lighter. Seemingly small points, but all considered to ensure the utmost quality in the finished product.

Ensuring our brand is delivering on our ethos is another factor that Alex is considering on these trips. At Kate Barton, longevity of product is extremely important. Aspects such as care labels are in fact critical in supporting our ethos. “If the labels aren’t correct and we’re giving out the wrong care instructions, this obviously doesn’t support long lasting clothes!”

In addition to visiting our main supplier in Delhi, Alex always makes time for some exploring and her most recent trip took her to the wonders of Jaipur. “Jaipur is an explosion of colour. A truly inspiring place to visit. New samples, new colour ways, brilliant block prints - my suitcases are empty on the way over but always overflowing on the way back!”

Now a seasoned traveller to India, Alex no longer stays in hotels and instead opts for a more authentic experience. Her most recent trip uncovered a few new spots that are now firmly in the diary for next time. Alex has shared her top tips for a more local experience below. She’s hoping they’ll have room for her next time she tries to book!

Alex’s Tips

Delhi

Connaught Place - known by the locals as simply CP is one of the main financial, commercial and business centres in New Delhi, perfect for your first visit. The Connaught Hotel is certainly a winner to give you a taste of the area if visiting for the first time.

Greater Kailash - more traditional than CP, but great for walking around and immersing yourself in the local culture.

Pinjore (close to the industrial area - opposite Patel Nagar Metro station) perfect for authentic southern & northern dishes.

Hauz Khas Village - is a gorgeous market area with interesting paved streets and fantastic shops with anything from clothing to homewear, shoes and accessories, pubs and rooftop terraces to watch the most glorious sunsets.

Khan Market - perfect if you are shopping for artisan goods (silver earring, pashminas, leather bags etc.)

N Block Market (in Greater Kailash) has plenty of clothing, homeware shops as well as restaurants. Some recommendations:

  • Forest Essentials - Kate’s favourite Indian cosmetics brand (and now mine too!)
  • Shalom/Laidback Cafe - perfect for authentic cuisine but don't feel ashamed to ask for European spiciness level (I have seen locals tearing up from the Sweet & Sour vegetable soup). Oh and the Rooftop Bar is an amazing spot in the evening.
  • Greenr Cafe for beautiful veggie options - very cool, young vibe.

Jaipur

  • Marigold Inn - a small replica of The Marigold Hotel from the famous movie - a truly spectacular place to stay. The most amazing fresh breakfast served on the sunny rooftop terrace is included in the price of the room.
  • The Curry Spoon - owned by the Marigold Inn (as I later discovered), is a breathtaking space. You really feel you've been welcomed into a Palace, but without the price tag.
  • The Blue Pottery Mahal - worth a visit if you enjoy traditional pottery. Simple set-up, but fabulous ceramics.
  • Patrika Gate - stunning architecture and free to walk around.
  • Amber Palace - I had limited time so I explored by myself, but I’d consider getting a guide next time
  • The Elephant Sanctuary - on my list for next time!
